The California Masonic Memorial Temple

Masonic Memorial Temple

The California Masonic Memorial Temple, or CMMT, is the headquarters of Freemasonry in California and also the name of the nonprofit that holds the title to the building and land on which it sits. The CMMT, located at 1111 California Street on San Francisco’s Nob Hill, opened in 1958 and stands as an icon of midcentury architecture. Designed by Albert Roller, the building includes an exterior frieze and 48-by-38-foot “endomosaic” mural by the artist Emile Norman. The temple includes a 3,000-seat auditorium (managed by the national concert promoters Live Nation); the Henry Wilson Coil Museum and Library of Freemasonry; Freemasons’ Hall, a meeting space for lodges; a five-level parking garage and the offices of the Grand Lodge of California

Masons believe that they have a duty to assist their fellow members as well as their communities. This is demonstrated in California by their dedication to the health and welfare of each member and their families as well as by funding state-wide literacy and public education initiatives.

History of Freemasonry

These lodges changed from being literal stonemason societies to what are known as "Speculative" Masons by the 17th century. These lodges' members, known as Freemasons, convened to study a number of ethical precepts. Four of these lodges united in London in 1717 to establish the world's first "grand lodge." Grand lodges were finally established by Masons in Scotland and Ireland, followed by the rest of Europe. Masons quickly founded lodges in every country on earth. Establish a Lodge Connection
